About 100 United States military personnel have arrived at Bauchi Airfield to support the Nigerian Armed Forces with training, technical assistance and intelligence cooperation, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Monday, February 16.In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the deployment was described as part of ongoing NigeriaUS defence collaboration, following recent engagements between military delegations of both countries.According to the DHQ, the presence of the US personnel followed a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria to address specific military training requirements.The arrival of the US personnel is planned and deliberate, based on a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for support in addressing clearly defined military training needs, the statement said.The military high command explained that the partnership is intended to enhance Nigerias access to specialised technical capabilities, strengthening efforts to deter terrorist threats and safeguard vulnerable communities.Major General Uba clarified that the US contingent comprises technical specialists operating strictly in advisory and training roles, not combat troops. He stressed that all activities would be conducted under the authority and direction of the Nigerian government, in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.The DHQ noted that Nigerian troops and the US advisers would carry out joint training exercises and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives aimed at improving the capacity of security forces to identify, counter and neutralise extremist groups.The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organizations that threaten the countrys sovereignty, national security, and the safety of its citizens, the statement added.The deployment highlights deepening defence ties between Nigeria and the United States as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and combat terrorism.
