At least 13 people died and 22 others were declared missing after a boat capsised in Zamfara State on Friday.

The boat was carrying residents of Birnin Magaji who were fleeing from bandits who attacked the community earlier on Friday when it capsized in a river near the community.

The incident occurred 24hours after an unspecified number of people died in a similar accident on the Jaranja River, Shagari local government area of Sokoto State.

A health worker, Shehu Mohammed, told journalists on Saturday that he lost three people in the incident.

He said: “My eldest son and two nieces were among the 13 people who died.

“People were panicking and rushed onto the boat. It simply couldn’t hold everyone.”

The district head of Birnin Magaji, confirmed the incident.

“13 people have been confirmed dead, 22 were rescued, and 22 others are still missing,” he stated.
