Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. on Thursday, alleged that the Senate was intentionally obstructing efforts to amend the Electoral Act 2022, cautioning that failure to review the law could severely damage the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement posted on his verified X account, Atiku described the 2023 polls as a “major setback,” arguing that loopholes in the current Electoral Act enabled widespread manipulation and made it nearly impossible for petitioners to prove their cases in court. He stressed that comprehensive reform of the electoral framework is the only way to avoid repeating the shortcomings of the last election.
“It is imperative that if the mistakes of the 2023 election are to be corrected, the legal instrument for the conduct of the 2027 and subsequent future elections needs to be reviewed,” he said.
Atiku expressed concern that the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, has shown reluctance to expedite the amendment process. He pointed to a recent investigation by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which he said underscored the Senate’s failure and highlighted the urgent need for legislative action.
“The credibility of the 2027 general elections hinges on the urgency with which the Senate treats this crucial bill,” Atiku warned, insisting that the revised law must be enacted well before the polls.
He concluded that any delay in passing the amendments would amount to a deliberate attempt to compromise the electoral process long before ballots are cast.
