2027: Gov Makinde says ADC coalition promoters bring nothing new to the table

As political discussions around potential coalitions intensify around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has asserted that those behind it being nothing new to the table, as they have been part of the existing political parties.

He reaffirmed the unity and strength of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West, describing the party as an enduring institution that cannot be threatened by alliances or defections.

Speaking to journalists on Friday following a meeting of the South-West PDP Caucus at the party’s zonal secretariat in Ibadan, Governor Makinde dismissed speculations that the recently reported coalition poses a threat to the PDP’s stability in the region.

“The PDP in the South-West is united and undivided,” he said. “The so-called coalition is not a threat to us. Those in it have been part of other political parties in the past, either the PDP or APC. What new thing are they bringing to the table?”

Makinde emphasized that the PDP remains the only credible alternative for Nigerians, asserting that party leaders in the South-West have resolved to stay within the party and address internal challenges, rather than seeking refuge elsewhere.

Using a metaphor, he said: “This Soji Adagunodo House is for the PDP South-West. If the roof is leaking, as responsible leaders, we won’t abandon it. We’ll fix it.”

The governor’s remarks followed a closed-door meeting attended by key party leaders including the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Kola Adewusi (representing Governor Ademola Adeleke), former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and other prominent stakeholders.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting stated that the South-West leadership of the PDP distanced itself from any political coalition, reaffirming its loyalty to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and commitment to the unity and progress of the PDP at all levels.

The Caucus also pledged to intensify mobilization efforts for the upcoming by-elections in Oyo and Ogun states, as well as the Lagos State local government elections, expressing confidence in the party’s electoral strength across the region.

In a strong rebuke of the Federal Government, the PDP leaders demanded the immediate release of the Osun State Local Government allocation, describing its continued withholding as “unconstitutional and a violation of the rights of the Osun people.”

The communiqué also highlighted growing concerns over worsening insecurity and economic hardship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, reiterating Governor Makinde’s earlier position that the 2027 general election would ultimately be a contest between the Nigerian people and the APC.

“The PDP remains the party of choice,” the Caucus declared, urging Nigerians not to lose hope but to rally behind the PDP in its mission to rescue the country from misrule.
