A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Ladan Salihu, has said the defections of the two former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabi’u Kwankwaso, from the party have dimmed the hopes of democratic renewal in Nigeria.
Salihu made this statement on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television.
The former Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) stated that the combination of the duo in the ADC would have provided an alternative route for government in 2027.
According to him, the opposition is currently fragmented by competing political forces and ambitions.
“Obi and Kwankwaso’s exit from the ADC dimmed hopes of democratic renewal. For the record, I am still a staunch and irrevocable member of the ADC.
“Nigerians had confidence in the amalgamation or aggregation of all opposition parties and movements.
“The Obidients and the Kwankwasiyya movement, and millions of people, believe that our democracy will thrive when there is a very strong and virile opposition.
“And so when they were with the ADC, the opposition was seen generally by Nigerians as that platform that will rekindle hope in democracy and provide an alternative route for government come 2027. But unfortunately, the opposition is fragmented by competing political forces and ambitions.
“At the highest level, shifting loyalties and political somersaults suggest that some actors view the opposition primarily as a platform for personal ambition rather than collective purpose,” he said.
