Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is executing a calculated plan to seize control of the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Kachikwu claimed the move is part of Abubakar’s strategy to actualise his presidential ambition, with pressure mounting on Labour Party’s 2023 candidate, Peter Obi, to serve as Abubakar’s running mate.
The allegations follow the formation, in June, of a political coalition involving Abubakar, Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, who had announced the ADC as their electoral platform for 2027.
Kachikwu alleged that Abubakar’s associates have infiltrated the ADC’s leadership structure nationwide, effectively securing control of the party. He accused the former vice-president of harbouring political bias against the South, despite public claims of affinity with the region.

“I warned that a group of mostly old former political officeholders were executing a carefully orchestrated agenda to take over the ADC to prosecute Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition come 2027,” Kachikwu said. “Peter Obi and other presidential hopefuls in this coalition of geriatrics are being duped, as Atiku’s men have been carefully positioned to take over the ADC party structure across the country.”
He further accused Abubakar and certain northern elites of exploiting regional and religious sentiments to undermine southern presidential aspirants, while falsely portraying President Bola Tinubu as hostile to the North.
Kachikwu presented what he described as evidence of forgery, alleging that signatures of ADC state chairmen were falsified on court documents to validate Ralph Nwosu’s disputed claim to the party’s chairmanship. He also condemned the appointment of former Senate President David Mark as ADC chairman, describing it as an illegitimate act facilitated by Nwosu, who he said lacked the legal authority to make such an appointment.
“Our lawyers have dispatched petitions to the appropriate law enforcement agencies,” Kachikwu said. “This is fraud being perpetrated in broad daylight.”
