2027: NNPP factional chairman dismisses Kwankwaso’s alliance declaration

Factional National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has declared that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, lacks the authority to impose any alliance on the party.

Major’s position follows Kwankwaso’s announcement at a meeting of his Kwankwasiyya group in Abuja on Thursday, where he stated that the NNPP was open to alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reacting in a statement made available to the media on Friday, Major described the National Executive Council meeting convened by Kwankwaso’s faction in Abuja as “null and void.” He maintained that resolutions from the meeting could not override existing party decisions or the judgments of the Abia and Federal Capital Territory High Courts on the NNPP’s leadership crisis.

“Beyond the obvious betrayal of trust, it is regrettable that Kwankwaso continues to use the NNPP’s name for negotiations and public comments that could fuel unrest in the country,” Major said, citing Kwankwaso’s recent criticism of the Federal Government over alleged neglect of the North as “a classical example.”

He further disclosed that the NNPP is awaiting the response of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to its request for recognition of the leadership structure produced from a court-ordered convention.

Major warned political actors that any alliance entered into with Kwankwaso under the banner of the NNPP would be “at their own risk,” stressing that the party remains committed to internal democracy.

“Our party is open to all Nigerians and will provide equal opportunities for aspirants through mandatory primaries. We shall not allow a repeat of the betrayals experienced in 2023. While the NNPP is not opposed to alliances with sister political parties when necessary, such arrangements must not be driven by personal vendetta,” he said.

He expressed hope that INEC would uphold the rule of law by recognizing the party’s legitimate leadership.
