The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North local government area of Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has cautioned politicians and their supporters against mocking and embarrassing one another, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse in politics.
The monarch asserted that rather than throwing insult to ‘political titans’ who have been making attempts in the past years to lead the state, political leaders in Ogun West and the state in general must be united to win the 2027 gubernatorial election.
Oba Akinyemi gave the warning in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday, urging political stakeholders to desist from mocking a member of the House of Representatives, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, over his renewed governorship ambition.
DAILY POST reports that Isiaka who represents Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress, declared his intention to run for Ogun State Governor in 2027, citing his experience and commitment to serving the people.
This declaration, however, led to several attacks on him as he was called a serial contestant who has always failed to win governorship elections since 2011.
Reacting to this Oba Akinyemi, stated that Isiaka’s political skills has allowed him to remain prominent and relevant in the state’s political landscape, arguing that political figures and their supporters should praise him rather than use derogatory language.
The traditional leader noted that some infrastructural developments including roads, schools, hospitals, and security facilities in his constituency were made possible by Isiaka.
He said, “The attacks are needless because he is not the only politician who has lost elections. Former President Muhammadu Buhari of blessed memory ran to become Nigeria’s President three times before making it the fourth time. Also, Abraham Lincoln failed several times before winning the election to become the 16th President of the United States of America.
“Hon. Isiaka’s past failures in gubernatorial elections in Ogun State are not good parameters to judge his political mastery and sagacity. Our experience in the gubernatorial election of 2019 is still very fresh in many people’s minds.”
Recall that during the 2019 election, Governor Abiodun of the APC won with 241,670 votes, beating Adekunle Akinlade, APM, who got 222,153 votes and Isiaka, ADC, who secured 110,442 votes.
“From these results, it is crystal clear that if Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka had teamed up with Hon. Adekunle Akinlade at the time, it would have become difficult for the incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun to win the election at the time.
“Hon. Isiaka needs to be celebrated because in 2019, he showed a lot of respect to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was the National Leader of the APC at the time.
“In sum, politicians in Ogun West and Ogun State in general should, please, stop mocking and embarrassing Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka as a serial contestant and loser. Other great political titans who have been making attempts in the past to lead our dear Ogun State should also be praised for their doggedness.”
The monarch called on President Bola Tinubu, Governor Abiodun and other leaders in the state to intervene and promote unity, arguing that new contestants will need the support of the older ones before and during the 2027 elections.
