The new Acting National Chairman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Abdulrahman, has resumed office with a pledge to rebuild and reunite the opposition party as it prepares for the 2027 general election.

Abdulrahman, who was announced as acting chairman on Saturday following the suspension of National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, made the promise while addressing journalists on Monday at the party’s Wuse mini office in Abuja.

His emergence came shortly after Anyanwu and his loyalists held a counter meeting where Abdulrahman was declared the party’s acting National Chairman, deepening the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.

Heavy security was deployed at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja as former Vice Chairman for PDP North Central, Mohammed, resumed his new role.

He and his supporters had earlier gathered at the FCT office of the PDP, where he addressed the crowd, confirming that he would be taking over as acting national chairman.

His supporters had protested on the premises of the secretariat calling on the now former acting national chairman, Damagum to vacate the office.

In his maiden address titled “A New Dawn,” Abdulrahman lamented the current state of the party, describing it as “pitiable,” and vowed to restore its lost glory through unity and accountability.

“We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of some of our leaders and members,” he said. “From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years, we have now spent over a decade in opposition. Our strength as a formidable opposition has been weakened by unexplainable defections of governors, legislators, and council chairmen.”

He said his acceptance of the role was guided by divine will and the confidence of key party stakeholders. “I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and the instrumentality of very critical stakeholders of this party,” he said.

Abdulrahman pledged to heal internal divisions and restore discipline within the PDP, adding, “My job here as Acting National Chairman is to heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation.”

Outlining his immediate priorities, he promised to reposition the party, ensure adherence to its constitution, and organise an all-inclusive national convention. “We will conclude all outstanding congresses at the zonal, state, local government, and ward levels, after which we shall hand over to a duly elected National Working Committee,” he said.

Abdulrahman also vowed to return the PDP to its foundational principles as a people-oriented party. “I want to assure all PDP faithful, stakeholders, and Nigerians that a new dawn has come and with it, the renaissance of our great party,” he declared.

He called on members to work collectively towards the party’s revival, stressing that unity and collaboration would be essential to success. “I cannot do this seemingly difficult job alone. I will need your prayers, support, and genuine commitment to lift our party upward,” he appealed.

The acting chairman confirmed that consultations were ongoing with key party leaders and that a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting would soon be convened to address the crisis and chart the way forward.
