The National Union of Teachers (NUT) said on Sunday at least nine states are yet to commence the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to teachers one year after the minimum wage bill was signed into by President Bola Tinubu.

The President signed the minimum wage bill on July 29, 2024, following its passage by the National Assembly six days earlier.

According to a data released by the NUT, states that have failed to implement the minimum wage include Abia, Adamawa, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Yobe, and Zamfara, while teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recently called off a strike action that lasted several months due to non payment of their salaries .

The NUT data also showed that some states like Adamawa only migrated from the N18,000 minimum wage to N30,000 approved by the late President Muhammmadu Buhari, as the teachers were yet to enjoy the new minimum wage of N70,000.

“In Ebonyi State, the minimum wage for teachers was yet to be implemented while in Enugu, the minimum wage had not been implemented, although the state government added N50,000 to the salaries of workers, including teachers, and labelled it an enhanced wage award,” the NUT said.

“In Gombe the minimum wage had not been implemented for primary school teachers; in Kaduna State, the government has blamed non-implementation on teachers’ verification exercise while in Nasarawa, Yobe, and Zamfara, the minimum wage was yet to be implemented for teachers,” the union stated.

In a statement by the President of the NUT, Titus Amba, the union urged states implementing the new wage to let it reach all categories of teachers.

“Let the minimum wage reach all workers so everyone will feel a part of it. It is unfair for those not getting the higher wage and it will affect the balance of education delivery,” the union added.
