Many structures inside Abia Hotels, located at 16 Finbarrs Road, Umuahia, have been demolished by the Abia State Government following the revocation of the property’s Certificate of Occupancy and the recovery of the facility from Investment Guarantee Limited.

The hotel was pulled down over the weekend by bulldozers after its repossession by the state government.

A visit to the hotel compound on Sunday revealed demolished sections of the property in rubble, with bulldozers positioned directly in front of the remaining buildings within the compound.

The Abia State Government, in a press statement issued on November 16, 2025, said the company which leased the property for development and upgrade failed to raise it to the agreed 3-star hotel standard, even after twelve years.

It further stated that compensation had been paid to Investment Guarantee Limited to cover the costs incurred in the development of the hotel complex and to enable the government utilize the facility for its intended purpose.

However, reacting to the sealing and subsequent demolition of the facility, Randie Ukanwoko, whose company, Investment Guarantee Limited, managed the hotel, alleged that the demolition was politically motivated, claiming it happened because he allowed the facility to be used for a political event.

Ukanwoko also said the Abia State Government paid N450 million into his bank account without any executed agreement, and expressed regret that the value of the demolished structures was far more than the N450 million paid, among other claims.
