An Abia indigene, Mr. Mbaonu O. Mbaonu, has appealed to Governor Alex Otti to intervene in the death sentence slammed on his son, Obadiah Mbaonu by an Abia State High Court for allegedly stealing phones.
Abia State High Court sitting in the Igbere Judicial Division had on July 7, 2020, sentenced Mr. Obadiah Mbaonu, the only son of his parents, to death by hanging over allegations of armed robbery involving mobile phones.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Agwu Umah Kalu in charge No.HIG/IC/2017, after the prosecution had alleged that the defendant robbed one Kalu. I. Kalu of his Nokia Lumia phone valued at N120,000 and Huawei MT7-TL10 phone valued at $600.
But speaking out again on the ruling, the father of the convict, Mr. Mbaonu O. Mbaonu of Ibinaukwu, Igbere, Bende LGA of Abia State insisted that his son was framed up, wrongly convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.
He claimed that a long standing land dispute was the root of his son’s travails.
Obadiah, who appealed to the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, to use his good office to intervene in his son’s case, said that his only son was wrongly convicted and framed due to a longstanding land dispute.
“My son is innocent and pleaded not guilty; he was framed up because of land dispute”, Mbaonu lamented.
He also lamented that his son was transferred from Afara Correctional Centre, Umuahia, to Enugu Correctional Facility far away from his family, adding that the case file had remained missing since the transfer.
Mbaonu who pleaded to Governor Otti to use his constitutional powers to review his only son’s case, claimed that his son was a victim of vendetta.
