
The maiden South-East Open Scrabble Championship has been concluded in Umuahia, with Abia State winning 18 games and recording 1 draw from 22 games to clinch the title.
Anambra State secured 2nd position with 16 wins and 1 draw, while Imo State finished 3rd after winning 14 games.
Enugu and Ebonyi states placed 4th and 5th, respectively, missing out on podium positions.
Declaring the championship closed, Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Jane Igwe, thanked Governor Alex Otti for providing the support for the state to host the championship.
The commissioner praised the players from the South-East states for remaining focused and for conducting themselves in a disciplined manner.
Also speaking, Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, thanked the athletes for travelling down from their different states to be part of the event, saying that new stars were discovered for the South-East states and Nigeria at large.
Speaking in an interview, the Most Valuable Player, MVP, of the championship, Chinedu Thorpe, encouraged young Nigerians to take up careers in scrabble as a way to channel their energies positively instead of taking to crime.
