
The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Ota toll gate accident that claimed the lives of six on Tuesday.
DAILY POST reported that the accident involving 10 victims occurred at about 9:32 am.
It involved a white cap and green body Mack truck with registration number: EKY 913YH, a yellow Suzuki mini bus registered as SMK16YK and a yellow TVS Tricycle with number plate AAA 840QM.
According to a statement by Salau H.O,
Divisional TRACE Command, Ota, the driver of the truck drove with speed and recklessly before ramming into several vehicles, including the tricycle and pedestrians.
He noted that the driver of the truck fled the scene while the injured were rescued to the State Hospital, Ota, and the presume dead deposited at the State morgue, Ifo.
Reacting to this, Governor Abiodun condemned the recklessness of truck drivers and ordered that anyone found culpable on investigation must face the full weight of the law.
He described the incident as painful and unacceptable,extending his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and comfort for them during this difficult period.
He also called for heightened vigilance and stricter traffic enforcement by the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to prevent a recurrence along the busy corridor.
In a related development, the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Lawal Adewale Wasiu visited the scene shortly after the incident alongside key local government officials, where he received briefings from security operatives coordinating rescue and control efforts.
The chairman expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and reiterated the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations.
He also cautioned against roadside trading and other risky activities that expose residents and commuters to avoidable danger, assuring that the council would collaborate closely with relevant agencies to strengthen safety compliance within the axis.
