Actor Chiwetalu Agu lists tools to break cycle of poverty

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has urged Nigerians to embrace hard work and determination as the true path to success, saying that prayers alone cannot lift anyone out of poverty.

Agu, who made the remarks in a trending video on Thursday, emphasized that while faith is important, many people misuse religion as an excuse for laziness and lack of focus.

According to him, poverty persists in society not because of a lack of divine intervention, but because too many people fail to put in the necessary effort to achieve their goals.

The actor, known for his comedic yet thought-provoking roles in Nigerian movies, said many youths today rely too heavily on miracles and “quick fixes” rather than consistent work and discipline.

He advised Nigerians to abandon the “manna mentality,” which holds that receiving heavenly favor necessitates human involvement via labor, and to stop expecting favors without doing any action.

He said, “Poverty does not die by fire. I repeat, poverty cannot die by fire. Pray from now to tomorrow; if you don’t work hard, poverty will deal with you.

“Yes, prayer is powerful; it connects you to divine wisdom and favor, but work is a channel through which blessings manifest. You can pray all day for success, but if you refuse to work, plan or act, you will still remain poor. God blesses effort, not idleness.”
