The Adamawa State government has demolished at least 2,000 illegal shops and attachments in the Jimeta ultra-modern market in Yola.

The Chairman of the committee for restoration of the market, Mr. John Juntuwa, disclosed this while speaking to journalists on the ongoing exercise on Wednesday in Yola.

He said the demolition was part of measures to restore the state capital to its original master plan.

Juntuwa said: “Notices were served to the traders who appealed for extension of seven days after the expiration and were granted 14 days by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

“Illegal structures have been affecting the free movement of customers and vehicles inside the market, adding that the exercise going on would improve the market standard and revenue generation effort.”

A businessman, Chief Henry Okobieme, appealed to the state government to provide an alternative space for the affected traders to continue their business.

“Any action taken by the government is for the betterment of the people and not to injure people.

“We are appealing to the government to provide an alternative trading space for the victims to avoid crimes,” he stated.
