The Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Abeokuta branch, has advised the Ogun State government to adopt renewable energy in order to support businesses, reduce carbon emissions and drive economic growth.
Chairman of the Society, Olumayowa Idowu, gave the advice on Tuesday, explaining that it will help lower emissions and local pollution while enabling productive activities and supporting local economic growth.
Idowu argued that the state, with its industrial clusters and residential estates, has the potential to lead in solar adoption.
The chairman who spoke at the commissiong of its secretariat 6000W solar-powered inverter system and 18-seater ford transit bus, maintained that if replicated in major offices across the state, it will reduce reliance on diesel generators, particularly in places where power outages occur frequently.
He said, “Nigeria is entering a new phase where renewable energy is no longer optional—it is essential.
“Ogun State has the potential to lead in solar adoption with its industrial clusters and residential estates. If we scale renewable solutions, we will improve reliability, support businesses, reduce carbon emissions, and drive economic growth.”
According to him, renewable energy will also assist households and companies in reducing operating costs, which will result in long-term savings on fuel consumption and electricity tariffs.
He noted that the society is committed to supporting government infrastructure and development initiatives, promoting innovation, digital transformation, and raising the next generation of vibrant, competent young engineers.
Meanwhile, he urged his colleagues to continue to innovate, collaborate, and embrace sustainable practices that can transform the society.
