Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi has equalled a 12-year-old record held by former captain John Obi Mikel following Nigeria’s 2-1 victory against Tanzania in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, opener on Tuesday night.
Iwobi provided two crucial assists that proved decisive in Nigeria’s victory against the Taifa Stars in Morocco.
The Fulham star set up the first goal with a brilliant cross that found defender Semi Ajayi, who headed home to give Eric Chelle’s men the lead in the first half.
In the second half, Tanzania’s Charles M’Mombwa equalized for his team, but two minutes later, Iwobi once again rose to the occasion as he gave teammate Ademola Lookman a smart pass, which the Atalanta forward fired in the winner for the Super Eagles.
However, according to Opta, Iwobi is now the second Nigerian player since 2010 to provide two assists in a single AFCON match, matching the feat last achieved by Obi Mikel.
Obi Mikel had provided two assists for the Super Eagles against Mali in February 2013, the year Nigeria secured their third AFCON trophy.
Meanwhile, Iwobi will hope to continue his impressive display for Nigeria when they face Tunisia in their next AFCON tie on Saturday.
