AFCON: CAF dividing Africa – Senegal’s Gueye speaks on returning gold medals to Morocco

Senegal midfielder, Idrissa Gueye, has accused the Confederation of African Football, CAF, of sowing division within Africa, following the organization’s decision to award Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Speaking after Everton’s 3–0 Premier League victory over Chelsea on Saturday, Gueye also stated he is willing to return the AFCON gold medals to Morocco in an effort to reduce tensions.

Senegal’s reign as African champion came to an end on Tuesday when CAF ruled that Morocco would be recognized as the winner of the 2025 tournament.

In post-match comments to Canal+ following Everton’s win against the Blues, Gueye said: “We know we are the African champions. For us, that doesn’t change anything. This announcement feels like a distraction meant to divide Africa. If it were up to me, I would have advised the federation not to appeal.

“I personally commit to collecting the medals and giving them back to Morocco if that helps ease the situation between the two countries.”

The Senegalese Football Federation has already confirmed it has taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
