AFCON: Why I recreated Kanu’s iconic celebration – Super Eagles captain Ndidi

1 hour ago 1

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has shared the inspiration behind his tribute to Nigerian football great Nwankwo Kanu, which he performed after scoring Nigeria’s second goal against Tunisia in the 2025 AFCON match on Saturday night.

Ndidi’s celebration mirrored Kanu’s iconic dance from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when Nigeria celebrated its thrilling comeback against Brazil in the semifinals.

During his post-match interview following the Super Eagles’ 3–2 triumph over Tunisia, Ndidi explained, “I was reminded of my dad, who always speaks highly of Kanu.

“I saw the video and thought, ‘I will do that for him.’ It was truly special to score my first goal in over a decade, and securing the win is even more important,” the Besiktas midfielder said.

Ndidi will now hope to lead Eric Chelle’s side to another victory when they face Uganda next on Tuesday.
