Agbakoba backs Tinubu’s overhaul of service chiefs, calls move decisive

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Olisa Agbakoba has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to replace the country’s service chiefs, describing it as a timely and necessary step to reinforce Nigeria’s security framework.

The president, on Friday, announced a sweeping reshuffle of the nation’s armed forces leadership, including the appointment of a new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as part of broader efforts to strengthen the military hierarchy.

Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Agbakoba said the president’s action was justified, particularly if reports of a potential coup were accurate. Recent speculation linked the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on October 1 to an alleged coup plot, though the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed such claims, insisting the cancellation was unrelated.

Agbakoba praised President Tinubu for demonstrating a level of decisiveness that, in his view, was lacking under the previous administration. “You have a president who is prepared to take tough decisions, and we know that he likes to take tough decisions,” he said.

“I think he has done the right thing because his predecessor, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, did not like to make such decisions and allowed his military team to stay far longer than they should have.”

The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president also highlighted the appropriateness of the timing. “So, if it is indeed true that there was a rumoured coup, I think he acted sensibly by doing exactly what he has done,” Agbakoba added.

The reshuffle, which marks a significant change in Nigeria’s military leadership, has been widely interpreted as an effort to assert civilian control over the armed forces and ensure a more robust security posture.
