A judicial commission of inquiry on Tuesday submitted a report alleging that over N117 billion was misappropriated during the eight-year administration of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The report, submitted to Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the Government House, accused the previous administration of widespread financial irregularities, including non-compliance with due process, breaches of extant laws and abuse of office.
Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Mu’azu Abdulkadir Pindiga (rtd), said the inquiry was established by the Sokoto State Government to examine the conduct of the former administration through verifiable records and sworn testimonies, in line with constitutional provisions and the public interest.
Justice Pindiga stated that the commission’s findings revealed alleged financial infractions amounting to over N117 billion, largely arising from disregard for procurement regulations, weak financial controls and abuse of executive authority.
According to him, the report is divided into five key sections covering the background of the inquiry, testimonies received, detailed findings, recommendations, and a summary and conclusion designed to guide government action.
He explained that the commission reviewed documents, contracts and financial records and also took testimonies from witnesses drawn from relevant ministries, departments and agencies, as well as other stakeholders connected to the administration under review.
Justice Pindiga commended members of the commission for their dedication, professionalism and integrity, stressing that the assignment was carried out without fear or favour.
He also appreciated members of the public and institutions that cooperated with the inquiry, noting that their contributions were vital to producing what he described as a far-reaching report in the long-term interest of Sokoto State.
He added that the submission of the report aligns with broader national efforts to promote democratic accountability, ensure prudent management of public resources and strengthen public trust in governance.
Receiving the report, Governor Ahmed Aliyu expressed gratitude to the commission members for their commitment and sacrifice in handling what he described as a sensitive national assignment.
He maintained that the setting up of the commission was not a political vendetta but a constitutional duty aimed at establishing facts based on evidence.
The governor disclosed that a committee would be constituted to study the report and prepare a white paper, assuring that the process would be carried out with sincerity and fairness to all individuals mentioned in the findings.
