Justice Jude Obiora of the Anambra State High Court, Awka, on Friday adjourned the alleged fraudulent and ritual cases involving an Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, to June 3.
The judge adjourned the matter after the court held that the defendant was not medically fit to take his plea.
The defendant, popularly known as “Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya,” (Water spirit) was brought to court amid a disagreement between the prosecution and defence teams over his health status.
The prosecution, led by the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), insisted that the case should proceed.
However, the defence counsel, Mr. Kingsley Awuka, maintained that his client’s condition warranted medical attention before further proceedings.
Speaking with journalists after the sitting, Nweke said the state government remained prepared to continue with the prosecution of the case.

On his part, Awuka expressed optimism that the defendant would be fit to stand trial by the next adjourned date.
Ezenagu was arrested on March 12, in Nnewi over alleged illegal rituals and supply of counterfeit currency to internet fraudsters.
He is standing trial under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law.
