Amazon, Google, Microsoft urge employees to remain in U.S. amid immigration uncertainty

Major U.S. technology companies—including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft—have reportedly advised their H-1B visa employees to avoid traveling outside the United States amid growing uncertainty over immigration policy and visa renewals.

According to reports, the firms quietly sent internal advisories to foreign workers on temporary visas, warning that leaving the country could put them at risk of delays or denials when re-entering.

The caution comes as immigration backlogs and heightened scrutiny under shifting U.S. visa rules have sparked fresh concerns for thousands of tech employees who rely on the H-1B program.

The H-1B visa, which allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations such as software engineering and data science, has long been a cornerstone of the American tech sector. Industry groups estimate that more than 70% of H-1B holders are employed in technology roles, with Indian nationals making up the largest share.

One employee at a major cloud computing company, speaking anonymously to the press, said, “We were told that even short trips abroad could lead to months of uncertainty. Many of us are postponing travel plans, even for emergencies.”

The warning highlights how dependent Silicon Valley depends on foreign talent at a time when U.S. policymakers are reconsidering visa allocations and tightening rules around skilled migration. Any disruptions could have ripple effects on projects, staffing, and global operations.
