Amnesty International has strongly criticised the deadly attack on opposition politicians in Benin City, Edo State.

In a statement released on its official X handle, Amnesty International Nigeria said gunmen opened fire on a convoy of politicians, including Peter Obi, at the home of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.

According to the statement: “Amnesty International strongly condemns yesterday’s deadly attack on prominent opposition figures in Benin city Edo state, as gunmen opened fire on a convoy of politicians — including Peter Obi — at the residence of former governor of Edo state Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.”

Amnesty International described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of attacks targeting opposition members in various parts of the country. The organisation stated that no one should lose their life or face violence simply for taking part in peaceful political activities.

It warned that repeated attacks and intimidation against opposition figures could make it more difficult for them to associate freely and hold public gatherings.

The human rights organisation called on the government to launch a prompt, independent and thorough investigation into the incident.
