Another player of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has been suspended from football on the allegations of match-fixing.
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community, Tanzanian Premier League side Singida Black Stars SC announced on Friday the immediate suspension of Super Eagles player, Amas Obasogie, who was the country’s second choice goalkeeper at AFCON 2025. The 26-year-old shot-stopper has been handed a three-month ban pending a full investigation into allegations of match-fixing.
The "Howler" That Sparked the Probe
The controversy stems from a Tanzanian league fixture on Thursday evening against Namungo FC. Singida Black Stars were leading 1–0 deep into second-half stoppage time and appeared destined for a victory. However, in the final moments of the game, Obasogie committed what many have described as a "suspicious howler."
A routine free-kick delivery was spilt by the Nigerian international into the path of Namungo’s Fabrice Ngoy, who tapped in the equalizer. The nature of the error, combined with unusual betting patterns reportedly flagged around the match, prompted the club’s disciplinary committee to take swift action.
Club Statement and Disciplinary Action
In an official statement released via the CEO’s office, Singida Black Stars confirmed the disciplinary measures; "The leadership of Singida Black Stars SC, through the Disciplinary Committee, has suspended Amas Obasogie for three months to allow for a thorough investigation into match-fixing allegations. The club reminds all staff to uphold the highest levels of integrity and respect for the game."
Obasogie was not the only player sanctioned; teammate and Ugandan international Khalid Aucho was also suspended for three months, though his ban is reportedly due to "indiscipline and repeated absenteeism" rather than match-fixing.
Impact on the Super Eagles
This suspension comes at a critical time for Obasogie’s international career. The former Bendel Insurance star had recently solidified his place as a reliable backup in the national team, having been part of the Super Eagles squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
