APC accuses Adeleke of sponsoring pensioners’ protest

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the state government of plotting to mobilise pensioners to stage protests at branches of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) over the ongoing dispute surrounding local government allocations.

In a statement on Sunday, APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi alleged that officials of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, alongside members of his family, were behind plans to sponsor demonstrations by retirees and other elderly individuals to gain public sympathy.

The party urged the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gothan, and other security agencies to intervene, warning that such protests could disrupt public peace.

“We condemn in its entirety the alleged hiring of pensioners and non-pensioners by Governor Adeleke for planned protests at UBA branches, as the matter is already before the court,” the APC said.

The opposition claimed Adeleke resorted to sponsoring protests after losing both in court and “in the court of public opinion.”

Responding, the governor’s spokesperson Olawale Rasheed dismissed the allegations, describing them as baseless and reflective of APC’s fear of the consequences of its “anti-human actions” in local government matters.

Rasheed insisted that Adeleke’s administration respects the rule of law and that citizens, including pensioners, have the right to oppose injustice through democratic means.

“Oppressed workers, pensioners, and citizens are aware of their rights to oppose injustice, but they will do so through democratic means, including delivering a decisive defeat to the APC in August,” he said.

He further accused the APC of attempting to exploit genuine grievances of pensioners to destabilise the state, urging security agencies to remain vigilant.

The dispute comes amid a prolonged battle between the APC and the PDP-led state government over control of local government councils, with both sides pursuing legal action to assert authority.
