The National Working Committee, NWC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has postponed the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses in Zamfara State until further notice.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the ruling party formally notified the commission of the suspension.
The correspondence, signed by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and the National Secretary, Sen. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, stated that the decision followed “ongoing consultations and the need to conclude certain preparatory and administrative processes to ensure the orderly, transparent, and credible conduct of the congresses in the state.”
According to the letter, the only process currently approved to hold in Zamfara is the election of three-man delegates from each local government area to participate in the party’s upcoming National Convention.
“The party will communicate a revised schedule of activities for the state to the commission in due course and in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022,” the letter read.
It was gathered that the postponement may be linked to ongoing consultations involving Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, as several reports state that the move could provide a window for Lawal, currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to conclude consultations ahead of a possible defection to the APC.
