APC’s Tonye Cole challenges Wike to clarify party allegiance

3 hours ago 2

Tonye Cole, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over what he described as confusion surrounding the minister’s political allegiance.

Cole, who contested the 2023 Rivers State governorship election under the APC, said Wike should clarify whether he remains with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or has formally aligned with the ruling party.

“Is he APC or is he PDP? As far as we know today, he is PDP. We cannot continue confusing the electorate in Rivers State and Nigerians at large. It is dangerous for democracy when someone belongs to one party but wields influence in another, creating an unclear political landscape,” Cole said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, broke ranks with his party in the build-up to the 2023 elections, opposing the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and calling for power to return to the South. He was later appointed FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu and has since publicly expressed support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.

In the August 30 local government elections in Rivers State, the APC secured victory in 20 out of 23 councils, while the PDP won three, including Obio/Akpo, Wike’s political stronghold where he once served as chairman before his tenure minister, and later as governor from 2015 to 2023.
