APM Terminals Apapa and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have introduced a drug and alcohol screening programme for external truck drivers operating at the Apapa port, as part of efforts to improve operational safety.
The checks, carried out at the port gate with assistance from Port Police and Port Health Services, involve breathalyser testing to confirm that drivers are sober before entering the terminal.
Lagos Port Manager, Adebowale Lawal Ibrahim, said the move is aimed at ensuring that drivers of heavy-duty vehicles are fully alert while on duty.
According to him, verifying the condition of drivers is essential to maintaining safety within the port, adding that routine testing would discourage substance abuse and enhance compliance among operators.
During the most recent exercise, 30 drivers were screened, with three returning positive results for alcohol use. Authorities noted that this marks a reduction compared to earlier screenings.
Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat said the company recently recorded 636 days without a lost time injury and is working to sustain that achievement by extending safety protocols beyond its workforce to include third-party drivers.
Alhraishat warned that impaired driving poses serious risks not only to the drivers themselves but also to other road users, port staff, and critical infrastructure.
He added that consistent enforcement, alongside awareness campaigns, would help address concerns around substance use among some drivers and encourage safer behaviour over time.
