Human rights organizations and cybersecurity researchers claim that Apple has warned several Iranians about advanced spyware attacks that target their iPhones.

In the months preceding the most recent Iran-Israel war, Apple sent out these alerts in the first half of 2025 as part of its continuous threat notification program.

According to research by Iranian cybersecurity researcher Hamid Kashfi, who is based in Sweden, and the Miaan Group, a digital human rights organization that focuses on Iran, several Iranians were issued these warnings.

At least a dozen people have been identified by researchers, including Iranian citizens living in Europe and dissidents inside Iran, though the precise number of victims is probably higher.

“Two people in Iran come from a family with a long history of political activism against the Islamic Republic. Many members of their family have been executed, and they have no history of traveling abroad,” Amir Rashidi, Miaan Group’s director of digital rights and security, told TechCrunch. “I believe there have been three waves of attacks, and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.”

Although more research is required to make a more definitive conclusion, Rashidi stated that Iran is most likely the government responsible for the attacks. “I don’t see why anyone other than Iran should target members of civil society,” he stated.
