After the launch of the iPhone 17e, Apple’s cheapest model from the 17 series, consumers anticipated a cheaper variant in the MacBook line, and it happened.
Apple just released the latest addition to the MacBook family; the MacBook Neo, which is their most affordable MacBook yet.
Announced today, March 4th, and available for immediate pre-order, the MacBook Neo starts at $599 or N570,000/N620,000 and brings Apple’s unique experience closer to price-sensitive consumers globally.
The main purpose behind the release of this machine is to create a budget-friendly alternative to premium MacBook models, and targets users who are interested in the reliable and aesthetic ecosystem of MacOS, without the high price.
What Makes it Unique
Aside from being a completely different addition to the MacBook family, the MacBook Neo comes with several perks that make it quite different from the others.
Our first observation was the difference in the chipset. Unlike the other MacBook models that rely on Apple’s powerful “M-series” silicon chips, the MacBook Neo version is powered by the A18 Pro chip, which was originally designed for iPhones.
This allows for impressive performance when it comes to daily tasks such as web browsing, streaming, some editing, and AI-assisted applications while keeping the energy consumption and price lower.
Apple also intelligently emphasised design and ecosystem features, such as tighter integration with iPhones and productivity tools. This sets it apart from other models in the MacBook family.

Although the launch of the MacBook Neo is part of Apple’s new strategy to make its core devices more accessible to a wider audience, Apple still made some trade-offs to keep costs down.
The most prominent of them is the chipset power. Although the A18 Pro chip is still quite enough for everyday tasks, it is still far behind the main M series silicone chips, designed primarily for MacBooks.
The A18 silicone chip, which was originally made for iPhones, can not match the M series when it comes to heavy tasks like video editing, coding, and heavy software usage.
Aside from the power difference, the MacBook Neo also comes with 8GB RAM, which is okay but can not be upgraded by users.
Also, you need to get the higher storage configuration to get the Touch ID feature.
For Tech users in Nigeria, the MacBook Neo could be a gateway to access the Apple ecosystem at a more accessible price that is comparable to mid-range Windows laptops. Although high import duties might make it more costly compared to abroad.
Altogether, the Neo is still a good choice for students, professionals, content creators and small business owners who want a laptop with strong battery life, reliable performance for everyday tasks and good support for productivity apps and iPhones. A popular category in the Nigerian market.
