Aregbesola explains main reason for move to ADC

Former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has rejected claims that he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), clarifying instead that he deliberately joined the party as a platform to lead Nigeria “out of darkness” ahead of the 2027 elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) expelled Aregbesola in January 2025 over alleged anti-party activities.

In a video shared on X on Monday, February 23, Aregbesola, now the National Secretary of ADC, told supporters that his decision followed failed attempts to reform the APC from within. He explained that the party’s leadership ignored his warnings and expelled him and his loyalists without due process.

“For context, I did not defect to ADC. I joined ADC as a platform to lead Nigerians from the darkness it is now to a new light. After a long effort to correct the madness in APC, which the current leadership refused to do, rather than listen to our word of caution and advice, they expelled me. They expelled me without due process. All those who were with me were also expelled,” he said.

Aregbesola added that he and his supporters were left with only two choices: “Now we have just two options: to abandon politics or to remain in politics and have a new platform to pursue our objective and vision for our people and the nation.”
