Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has called on citizens to remember and honour the bravery, patriotism, and sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the ceremony to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at Ramat Square, Maiduguri, on Thursday, Zulum said the occasion is “a day of deep reflection and profound gratitude” for the gallant men and women of the military.
He emphasized that the peace and freedom enjoyed by citizens today “did not come cheaply” and were earned through courage, resilience, and selfless service.
According to the governor, the sacrifices of fallen soldiers remain a “timeless symbol of national service and love for the country.”
Zulum further noted that remembrance extends beyond those who fell on the battlefield, highlighting veterans who served with honour and the families, especially widows and children, who continue to bear the burden of loss with courage and dignity.
The governor urged citizens to move beyond ceremonial activities and demonstrate appreciation for the welfare of ex-servicemen, widows, and dependants of fallen heroes.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to security, peace, and the wellbeing of serving and retired military personnel.
“As we wear the emblem, let it serve as a constant reminder of sacrifice, courage, and duty,” Zulum said.
“Let it inspire us to uphold the ideals for which our heroes fought, unity, justice, patriotism, and selfless service to humanity.
“May the souls of our fallen heroes rest in perfect peace, and may their families find comfort in the gratitude of a caring and appreciative society,” he added.
