Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested two suspected gun runners in separate intelligence-led operations in Taraba State under Operation Peace Shield.
The arrests, according to the Brigade, were carried out on January 11, 2026, following credible intelligence.
“In the first operation, troops working alongside operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) apprehended a 48-year-old suspect, Christopher Adamu, also known as ‘Suffer’, at Sebos Joint in the Mayo Dasa general area of Jalingo Local Government Area.
“Items recovered from the suspect included a hunter’s identification card, two ATM cards, a National Identification Card, an Itel keypad mobile phone, six rings, a hand band and assorted charms. Preliminary investigations indicated that Adamu was actively involved in illegal arms trafficking,” the statement read.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to working with an accomplice identified as “Chmn” from Shomo Gari in Karim Lamido Local Government Area.
“Acting on further intelligence generated from the arrest, troops subsequently apprehended another suspected gun runner, 37-year-old James Yangyang, at Tautre Village on the outskirts of Anguwan Bera in Ardo Kola Local Government Area,” the statement added.
According to the statement, signed and made available to journalists on Monday by the acting spokesperson of the Brigade, Lt. Umar Muhammad, investigations also revealed that Adamu allegedly sold an AK-47 rifle to one Bazoe John of Murbai Village, Ardo Kola Local Government Area, in November 2025, pointing to the existence of a wider arms supply network in the state.
Both suspects were confirmed to be currently in military custody and are undergoing further investigation before being handed over to the relevant authorities for prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops and intelligence operatives for their professionalism and effective collaboration.
He warned criminals and arms traffickers to desist from illegal activities, stressing that the Brigade would not relent in its efforts to rid Taraba State of illegal arms and criminal elements.
Brigadier General Uwa also called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information, assuring them of confidentiality and swift response.
