Prominent Nigerian leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, paid their last respects at the graveside of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Daura, Katsina State.
Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 81, was buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, in line with Islamic burial rites. His death and funeral have drawn a steady stream of mourners and high-profile visitors to the northwestern town.
Atiku Abubakar, one of the earliest to arrive in Daura among a growing list of dignitaries, described the late leader as: “a man who dedicated his life to the service of the nation.”
Also offering his condolences, Peter Obi reflected on the importance of unity during national loss, stating:
“In moments like this, we must remember the bonds that unite us beyond politics.”
The former president, who led Nigeria first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president between 2015 and 2023, was laid to rest at the garden within his Daura residence—a place he frequented for reflection during his lifetime.

On Tuesday morning, Buhari’s remains were flown into Nigeria, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. At the Katsina Airport, President Tinubu personally received the body alongside members of a high-powered federal delegation.
The burial ceremony, marked by full military honours, featured a solemn procession as Buhari’s body—wrapped in the national flag—was wheeled to the grave on a military trolley. A ceremonial gun salute was fired to honour his legacy as Nigeria’s former commander-in-chief.
Mourners continue to troop into Daura to console the Buhari family and honour a man many regard as a symbol of integrity and service in Nigeria’s complex political history.
