Seventy abducted persons have been released by bandit leaders in Katsina State as part of a peace agreement reached between local communities and armed groups.
The releases followed negotiations with a notorious bandit leader, Isiya Kwashen Garwa, who freed 40 hostages in Faskari Local Government Area over the weekend.
The latest release exercise came two days after his camp released 30 other captives, bringing the total number of people set free to 70.
A video showing the latest batch of released victims has been circulating on social media.
Community leaders involved in the talks said the releases were the outcome of ongoing dialogue with Garwa’s group, which has been under pressure to demonstrate commitment to the peace deal.
The released abductees many of whom were farmers from Faskari area, are now receiving medical checks and debriefings before being reunited with their families.
