The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sami Gomo III, has called on the Federal Government to establish additional military formations in Zuru Emirate to curb escalating bandit attacks that are disrupting economic activities in parts of Kebbi State.
The monarch made the appeal during a visit to the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), in Abuja, where he said insecurity in the emirate had continued to displace farming communities and undermine agriculture, mining and local trade.
According to the Emir, the scale and frequency of attacks now require stronger federal intervention, including increased troop deployment and improved military equipment.
He said persistent violence in rural areas of Zuru, Sakaba and Danko/Wasagu local government areas had forced residents to abandon farmlands, affecting food production and livelihoods in the region.
The Emir noted that the area, known for its agricultural and mineral resources, has suffered declining economic activities due to insecurity, adding that sustained federal support was necessary to complement efforts by the Kebbi State Government.
In his response, the Minister of Defence acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that the Federal Government would review the request for enhanced security presence in the affected areas.
Zuru Emirate is located in southern Kebbi, a zone increasingly affected by banditry and cross-border criminal activities in the North-West, with security challenges also spilling into neighbouring states.
