Bauchi APC feud deepens as Yuguda accuses foreign affairs minister of undermining party

Fresh tensions have erupted within the Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with former governor Isa Yuguda openly accusing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, of working against the party’s cohesion.

The dispute intensified on Wednesday following a petition reportedly filed against Yuguda at the APC national secretariat. In a sharp rebuttal, Yuguda’s camp dismissed the move as a calculated smear campaign, describing it as a “desperate” effort to damage his reputation in the aftermath of a contentious state congress.

Central to the controversy are allegations of inducement, with Yuguda’s media office claiming that a $150,000 bribe was allegedly used to influence members of the party’s national delegation in a bid to override grassroots consensus and tilt control of the state structure in favour of the minister.

In a statement issued by his media office and signed by Dapo Okubanjo, the former governor warned that the actions attributed to Tuggar posed a serious risk to party unity in a politically strategic state tied to President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

The crisis has also taken a personal dimension, as Yuguda’s team expressed regret over what it described as the minister’s betrayal of a long-standing relationship. The statement lamented the “character assassination of the man, God used to nurture him into political success.”

It further recalled that Yuguda played a key role in Tuggar’s early political rise, particularly in 2007 when he supported his entry into the House of Representatives, adding that it was disappointing to witness the minister engage in “character assassination” against his former mentor.

Reaffirming his political standing, Yuguda highlighted his experience as a two-term governor and former federal minister, noting that his current focus remains his assignment as North East Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

He also criticised the minister’s involvement in state-level disputes, arguing that someone occupying such a high national office should prioritise broader responsibilities rather than “sowing seeds of discord” within party ranks.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Yuguda maintained a conciliatory tone, insisting he would “not descend to the level of politics of pettiness and division,” while stressing that his priority was securing President Tinubu’s re-election and strengthening the APC’s hold in Bauchi State.
