Benin Republic President Patrice Talon has called on neighbouring countries to cooperate in the arrest and extradition of Colonel Pascal Tigri and other suspects linked to a foiled coup attempt, after they reportedly fled across international borders.
Speaking at a press briefing in Cotonou, President Talon disclosed that arrest warrants have been issued for the suspects, adding that formal requests have been sent to countries believed to be sheltering them.
“They have been able to cross the borders. We have issued warrants against them and requested the concerned countries to cooperate and deliver them to us,” Talon said.
The Beninese leader stressed that accountability was non-negotiable, expressing confidence that regional authorities would honour the request.
“I hope they will cooperate and deliver them to us, because they have to answer,” he added.
President Talon provided further details on how the prime suspect escaped, stating that Tigri fled his camp in haste, travelling by car without personal belongings and leaving a boy behind at the scene.
“He left abruptly, without his effects, and later claimed he was no longer present when a strike occurred. That situation created the opportunity for them to escape across the border,” the president explained.
Talon noted that Benin had activated international and regional cooperation mechanisms, formally notifying relevant countries to assist in locating and handing over the suspects. He said compliance with the extradition request would be crucial to easing diplomatic tensions arising from the alleged attempt to destabilise the country.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Nigerien authorities regarding the extradition request.
