Governor Hyacinth Alia has ordered the swift repossession of all government lands illegally taken over within the Commissioners’ Quarters in Makurdi, following his inspection of the ongoing renovation at the facility.
He cautioned that unauthorized occupation would not be accepted and advised those affected to obtain land legitimately through the appropriate government processes.
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, gave the directive on Wednesday after carrying out an on-site assessment of the renovation work at the quarters, where issues of encroachment were observed.
The governor instructed the Ministry of Works, the Office of the Attorney General, and other relevant agencies to begin immediate steps to recover the affected lands.
He emphasized that illegal occupation of public property disrupts proper land management and fairness in allocation.
He added that individuals currently occupying such lands must vacate and follow due process to secure allocation through the proper authorities.
While inspecting the project, Governor Alia praised the contractor for the quality and pace of work, describing the construction as solid and meeting expected standards.
He also revealed plans by the government to explore further development within the large premises, including putting up additional structures to maximize the available land.
According to him, completed units will soon be assigned to senior government officials.
Reiterating his administration’s focus on workers’ welfare, the governor disclosed that more properties have been secured to tackle housing challenges faced by civil servants in the state.
He noted that providing decent housing would enhance long-term stability and improve productivity.
Alia further urged civil servants to take advantage of such opportunities and prepare for life after retirement, pointing to agriculture as a rewarding and sustainable investment.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress and standard of work at the Commissioners’ Quarters, the governor assured that efforts to expand housing infrastructure would continue.
So far, nine housing units have been delivered, while construction is still ongoing on several others.
