Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with the Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday as both countries renewed ties amid changing global economy and international security challenges.

Carney and Xi jointly announced a new Canada-China strategic partnership grounded in five pillars – energy, economic and trade cooperation, public safety and security, multilateralism, and culture.

Agreeing to increase their people’s prosperity, the leaders noted the opportunities in conventional and clean energy to drive the low-carbon economy, boost energy security, and create high-paying careers.

PM Carney and President Xi endorsed memorandums of understanding across energy, combating crime, modern wood construction, culture, food safety, and plant and animal health.

The two countries are set to reinforce trade and economic relations, including through bilateral mechanisms such as the Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue and the Ministerial Dialogue on Energy.

Carney and Xi commended the progress made on resolving trade issues, including for Canadian agriculture and agri-food products, namely canola and seafood, and Chinese electric vehicles.

They further affirmed their commitment to multilateralism and to addressing pressing global issues, such as climate change, environmental protection, and the international monetary and financial system.

Emphasizing the need to collaborate on security issues, including narcotics trafficking and cybercrime, Carney welcomed plans to deepen engagement on national security issues at senior levels.

“The progress we have made in the partnership sets us up well for the new world order,” he said. “It’s a partnership with new focus and a sense of purpose, and I look forward to realizing its promise and building on it in the years to come.”

The Prime Minister confirmed he would return to China in November for the 33rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit in Shenzhen.
