Catholic priests from the Jalingo and Wukari dioceses of Taraba State, on Thursday, took to the streets of Jalingo, the state capital, to protest the escalating wave of killings and kidnapping of Christians in the state.
Clad in their clerical cassocks and carrying crucifixes and placards, the priests marched through major streets, chanting hymns and demanding justice and an end to the massacres.
One of the priests who spoke to journalists during the demonstration, said they were demanding an immediate end to attacks targeting Christian communities, especially the Tiv people, and called on authorities to protect the innocent.
He said the priest were angry in the wake of a series of violent killings in the state, including the murder of one of their own, Rev. Fr. David Tanko on 2 February, by Fulani bandits.
He warned that without decisive action, the violence could escalate further, leaving more communities displaced and vulnerable.
“Thousands have already fled their homes. We are urging the government to act swiftly to restore peace, prevent further killings, and address what they describe as a looming humanitarian crisis,” he said.
