US President Donald Trump has named Inter Miami star Lionel Messi as the biggest football star in the world at the moment.
Trump spoke to DAZN after watching Chelsea defeat Paris Saint-Germain 3–0 to lift the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday night.
DAILY POST reports that while Trump may have gone old school in naming the greatest footballer of all time (GOAT) as the late Brazilian icon Pelé, the US leader holds Lionel Messi in high esteem.
Trump heaped praise on the Argentina international, who plays for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.
According to the American leader, Major League Soccer is fortunate to have the World Cup winner.
As quoted via Tribuna, he said, “Messi, yes, he’s a great star, probably the biggest soccer star on this planet.
“Our country is lucky to have him playing here every week.”
Messi and his Inter Miami side participated in this year’s FIFA Club World Cup but crashed out in the round of sixteen.
Cole Palmer scored two identical goals and provided an assist for João Pedro as Chelsea netted three first-half goals to see off PSG.
