Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has given his support to the formation of a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He described the development he described as being healthy for Nigeria’s democracy and will nullify the perception of the country slipping into a one-party state.
Gbajabiamila, who made the assertion on Saturday while speaking with journalists after casting his vote in Surulere in the Lagos State local council election, said the opposition coalition is a positive development for Nigeria’s democracy, but however, expressed doubt in its future and effectiveness.
Gbajabiamila stated that the coalition would promote broader political engagement across Nigeria’s multi-party system.

“It’s a welcome development with the coalition. It’s not the first time we’re seeing this. It’s a welcome development. In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition, otherwise, we’ll run into a one-party state. But I’m not sure where it would go.
“This is a healthy development for democracy. Democracy without opposition is not democracy. There has to be a robust and virile opposition that keeps the government on its toes.
“There has to be some level of opposition in a democracy. People must have options and choices.
“It is only through such competition that we deepen democratic values and improve governance. However, for whatever the coalition is worth, I am not sure where it will go, that is, if it will go anywhere,” he said.
