CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT: Gov Mbah advocates additional South-East state, rotational Presidency

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has expressed strong support for the ongoing constitutional amendment process, calling on the National Assembly to address long-standing demands for equity, inclusion, and regional balance, particularly as they concern the South-East.

Speaking on Friday during a courtesy visit by the South-East Zonal Committee on Constitution Review of the House of Representatives, led by Hon. George Ozodinobi, Governor Mbah urged lawmakers to consider the creation of an additional state in the South-East, the institutionalization of rotational presidency, and the establishment of state police.

The visit, which took place at the Government House in Enugu, preceded the committee’s zonal public hearing scheduled for Saturday at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.

Describing the visit as “timely and symbolic,” Governor Mbah drew attention to Enugu’s historic role in Nigeria’s legislative evolution, noting that the Eastern Regional House of Assembly first convened in the city as early as the 1940s.

“You cannot discuss the evolution of legislative activities in this country without mentioning Enugu,” Mbah said. “This review process is a reminder that the constitution is about the people and for the people.”

The governor emphasized that the constitution must reflect the collective will of Nigerians and evolve in response to the nation’s changing needs. He urged the committee to give serious attention to structural reforms that promote national unity and a sense of belonging for all regions.

“For equity and inclusivity, the South-East should be accorded an additional state,” Mbah said. “This will help address the imbalance in state representation and foster a stronger sense of national inclusion.”

On the issue of presidential rotation, the governor argued that allowing all regions a fair opportunity to lead the country would promote unity and national cohesion.

“The rotation of the presidency is a necessary step toward giving every part of the country a sense of ownership and representation in national leadership,” he stated.

Governor Mbah also made a case for gender equity, advocating affirmative action through the creation of additional legislative seats for women.

Turning to security, he reiterated the urgent need for state police, describing it as “non-negotiable” in light of the country’s deteriorating security situation.

“If you look at the intractable security situation in the country today, empowering the states through the creation of state police has become imperative,” Mbah said. “It is a position most states agree on.”
