Court grants 109 foreigners arraigned for cybercrime bail

Justice Ekerete Akpan of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, granted at least 109 foreigners charged for alleged cybercrime bail in the sum of N1 billion with five sureties.

He directed that the sureties must have a landed property worth N200 million each.

The judge also ordered the sureties to deposit the original and verified documents of their landed property with the court’s deputy registrar.

He equally ordered the defendants to be remanded in Keffi Correctional Centre in Nasarawa State pending the perfection of their bail terms.

Justice Akpan adjourned the matter till February 27, 2025 for trial.

Police recently arrested foreigners who were said to be from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

They were picked up at their residence at Plot 1906, Cadestral Zone 807, Katampe District of Abuja, where they were engaging in cybercrime by allegedly promoting “a fraudulent and unregistered gaming platform.”

In a six-count charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/599/2024 filed by the Inspector-General of Police, the foreigners were charged with cybercrime, money laundering and unlawfully residing in Nigeria.

The offence, according to the prosecution, was contrary to Section 27 (1) (b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015 (As Amended, 2024) and punishable under the same.
