Court grants El-Rufai access to medical care in ICPC custody

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has secured court approval to receive medical treatment while being held in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission amid his ongoing corruption trial.

The order was issued on Wednesday by Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Kaduna following an application by El-Rufai’s legal team during proceedings in the case involving alleged money laundering and corruption-related offences.

El-Rufai and his co-defendant, Joel Adoga, are currently facing a 10-count charge linked to alleged possession and conversion of proceeds of corruption, as well as violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Both men have denied the allegations.

According to a statement released by ICPC spokesman John Odey, the defence urged the court to allow the former governor access to specialised medical attention while he remains in custody.

“In the course of proceedings, the defence counsel also made a compassionate plea urging the court to direct the commission to allow the defendant access to medical treatment, specifically for dental and eye care, at designated facilities in Abuja,” the statement read.

The defence specifically requested that El-Rufai be permitted to receive treatment at Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital in Abuja.

After considering the request, Justice Aikawa granted the application and instructed the anti-graft agency to escort the former governor to the approved medical facilities whenever necessary under close supervision.

The court also directed that El-Rufai be returned to custody immediately after each medical visit, stressing that every movement connected to the treatment must remain strictly monitored by the commission.

Odey stated that the ICPC would obey the court’s directive while continuing to maintain lawful custody of the defendant pending compliance with his bail conditions.

Before the latest ruling, the court had granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like amount. The administrative bail earlier granted to the second defendant was also adopted by the court.

The case was adjourned until May 7, 2026, for ruling on the application seeking a variation of the bail conditions.
