A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 21-year-old man, Umar Idris, to death by hanging for the killing of a shop owner, Sabiu Umar.

Idris, a resident of Farawa Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area, was found guilty of culpable homicide following a trial in which the prosecution established that he fatally stabbed the 28-year-old victim.

Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the incident occurred on September 2, 2021, at Tsamiya Mariri Quarters in Kano. He explained that Idris unlawfully entered the victim’s shop at about 10:30 p.m., where Sabiu both worked and lived, and stole wedding garments intended for his bride.

According to the prosecution, the deceased raised an alarm after discovering the intrusion, leading to a confrontation. During the struggle, Idris allegedly attacked him with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries to his neck, shoulder and other parts of his body, which ultimately led to his death.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered the defendant’s confessional statement as evidence. However, Idris denied committing the offence.

In his defence, counsel to the accused, Muftau Bello, called two witnesses and appealed to the court for leniency.

Delivering judgment, Justice Sunusi Ado-Ma’aji held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge consequently sentenced Idris to death by hanging.

“I hereby sentence Idris to death by hanging for stabbing the victim on his neck, shoulder and other parts of his body, which resulted in his death. May the Lord have mercy on his soul,” the judge ruled.
