A leadership crisis has erupted in the Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership.
One faction, led by Malam Mohammed Mainasara, said it was mandated by the party’s national leadership to oversee the conduct of the state congress.
Mainasara, who identified himself as Chairman of the Congress Committee, said the committee successfully conducted the exercise, leading to the emergence of a new State Executive Committee through a consensus arrangement endorsed by stakeholders.
According to him, Malam Shehu Gulubba emerged as State Chairman, while Ahmad Hashim was elected Secretary. Other officials include Jafafar Aliyu as Youth Leader and Maryam Abdullahi as Women Leader.
In his acceptance speech, Gulubba pledged to strengthen the party and promote unity across the state, noting that his leadership would prioritise grassroots development and internal cohesion.
However, a rival faction led by Kabiru Garba Gusau rejected the outcome of the congress, insisting that he remains the legitimate chairman of the party in Zamfara.
Gusau described the development as provocative, alleging that certain individuals were backing the opposing faction to destabilise the party for political gain.
He maintained that any valid congress must involve all stakeholders and reflect a collective agreement.
The faction also said it had reported the matter to security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, DSS, for intervention.
Gusau further announced the suspension and dismissal of members who participated in the disputed congress, asserting that he has the constitutional authority to take such actions as the recognised chairman.
